Attacks on democracy and populism: defending the constitution and the role of digital constitutionalism

This article examines the contemporary challenges to the defense of the Constitution and the separation of powers, fundamental pillars of the Rule of Law, in the face of the rise of populist movements and autocratic regimes. The central inquiry lies in understanding how democratic institutions and constitutional safeguards, originally designed to preserve liberty and limit power, may paradoxically allow processes of institutional erosion. In this context, the study highlights the role of digital constitutionalism as an emerging legal framework, capable of providing normative responses to new threats to democracy within the digital society and information technologies.
