Abstract

The purpose of this paper, was estimate econometrically the effect of productivity (ton per hectare) and the nominal exchange rate on the competitiveness of exports of the palm oil sector in the department of Magdalena - Colombia, during the months between 2007 and 2015. The variable used to measure the competitiveness of exports was the Additive Revealed Comparative Advantage Index (ARCA). The econometric method used was Ordinary Least Squares (OLS). As a result, the model predicts an increase of 1,15 in the ARCA, when reaching a productivity of one ton per hectare, while the effect resulting from the Nominal Exchange Rate is lower (0,001). This suggests policies aimed at increasing productivity per hectare, protecting the environment (which implies the correct agrological use of soil for this crop), through the implementation of cutting-edge technologies obtained through the result of knowledge management.
