Abstract

The study estimates and analyzes the information on the main dimensions and characteristics of inter-regional residence-work mobility in the “new” Biobío region in Chile, contained in the National Employment Survey of the Instituto Nacional de Estadística of the State of Chile, period 2010-2017. For the main destinations and origins of the commuters of the Biobío region, their relationship with the dynamics of the respective macroeconomic and regional series is investigated in order to verify or reject the hypothesis of synchronicity of the productive cycles with the flow of commutators as a cause of labor mobility. Additionally, through a model of autonomy of supply and demand, the Chilean regions are characterized according to their status as net bidder or claimant, together with an analysis of trend and intensity of commutation. In addition, the economic impact of this process is quantified by crossing the commutators with the average income history of those employed by territory and average income by economic activity of the Biobío region.
