Analysis of the Roles of History of Philosophy within Philosophical Education:Towards a Didactical Proposal to Promote Philosophical Plumbing

The text argues in favor of teaching the history of philosophy as a way to promote a strong philosophical education. First, we will expound Mary Midgley’s contrast between plumbing and philosophy in order to show how every good philosophical thought presupposes knowledge of its own history. Then, we will present a didactic proposal to develop an approach to the history of philosophy that promotes philosophical reflections. For this, we will use Richard Rorty’s genres to describe the historiography of philosophy. In the final section of the text, we will expand Rorty’s ideas with a concrete proposal to develop class activities within a course on the history of philosophy that would promote philosophical reflections.
