Determinants of the Duration of Unemployment in the Department of Boyacá - Colombia, 2019-2021

One way to approach the understanding of the labor market is to study the duration of unemployment and the factors that determine it. The objective of this work is to estimate the determinants of the duration of unemployment in the department of Boyacá - Colombia for the period 2019-2021, using data from the large household survey (GEIH) of DANE. Through quantile regressions, for durations from 1 to 8 weeks, from 9 to 20 and greater than 21 weeks. The results obtained show that being the head of the household decreases the unemployment time of a worker, verifying the hypothesis that women have longer periods of unemployment than men. The variables age and schooling have a similar effect, older age or more years of education decrease the duration of unemployment, but only up to a certain threshold, after which the search period becomes longer. On the other hand, it is evident that other income is not a significant variable.
