Abstract

The instruments and techniques of social and qualitative research for the collection of information, particularly when dealing with children and adolescents in situations of vulnerability, are diverse and particularly aimed at the analysis of drawings, the application of tests and interviews. However, this article identifies the possibilities of using audiovisual production techniques: photo-elicitation and film clips, as instruments for approaching the subjectivities, perceptions, knowledge and attitudes towards the context, identity and culture of children and adolescents who have lived through the experience of forced migration and refuge. With this in mind, we studied the inhabitants of the municipality of Gramalote, displaced by a natural disaster and living in a temporary shelter in Colombia; Afro-descendants internally displaced by the armed conflict in Colombia, resettled in a neighbourhood in Bogotá, and Sahrawi refugees living in the Tindouf camp in Algeria. We stablished that, when noticing the use of cameras, video cameras and mobile phones, the participation of the children and adolescents was decisive, open and spontaneous. During the creative production process within the framework of the photo-elicitation, communication was fluid; as a consequence they managed to provide deep information about their situation, along with manifesting their feelings and making them public without exposure. In addition to expressing the information required for the research, they were able to develop ICT-mediated communicative competences with the film clips, which meant the process had a double result.
