Abstract

Introduction: The performance of construction workers is a subject little studied, even more so if it is linked to compliance with occupational health and safety standards.
Objective: To determine the relationship between the degree of compliance with Occupational Health and Safety standards and the performance of workers from four construction companies in the city of Quito.
Methods: Non-experimental, relational, cross-sectional research applied to 167 workers. Two questionnaires were applied to collect sociodemographic/labour information and to evaluate performance. The checklist of the Ministry of Labor was applied to measure the degree of compliance with health and safety standards.
Results: They show a significant relationship between drug use and counterproductive behaviors (p= 0.024); smoking habit and contextual performance (p= 0.023); sleep and rest at night with contextual performance; (p= 0.000); low temperature with contextual performance (p= 0.038); high temperature with task performance (p= 0.042); duration of the day and contextual performance (p= 0.015); being able to pause and contextual performance (p= 0.003); relationship with bosses and task performance (p= 0.011); relationship with peers and counterproductive behaviors (p= 0.022) and contextual performance (p= 0.007). Statistical significance was obtained in the correlation between the degree of compliance with OHS norms and counterproductive behaviors (Rho(167) = 0.215; p= 0.003).
Conclusion: The relationship between the degree of compliance with OHS standards was statistically significant with the dimension of counterproductive behaviors.
