A psychosocial look at the “Make America Great Again” speech: Influence and social exclusion in some US presidential campaign speeches 2017-2021

Abstract

The following article seeks to establish the different dimensions of psychosocial inquiry related to the influence and social exclusion that may arise from the analysis of the political discourse “Make America Great Again” promoted by Donald Trump during the US presidential campaign for 2017-2021. Methodologically, the study adopts a qualitative approach of interpretative-exploratory type, carrying out a content analysis of five speeches made by Trump throughout the campaign. Among the results obtained, it was observed that the main social influence strategies fall on the creation of a messianic figure of salvation in the face of political and economic social problems, which is increased by the credibility that Trump has built around his administrative capacity, his identification as a pair of any patriotic and at the same time indignant American; against social exclusion, prejudice under an authoritarian figure and the creation of a public enemy, were key elements to structure the discourse that had enough popularity to win. Our conclusions and discussion rescue the richness of reflecting on political speeches and ends by identifying it as an expression of populism, now widespread in Western politics.
