Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the application of universal precautions for clinical work (CDC Atlanta USA 1987) in an IPS (Level I) of Southwestern Colombia.

Methodology: The study involved 15 health personnel workers who were evaluated for compliance with the direct observation.

Results: In general, in all the IPS areas evaluated, a poor application of the universal precautionary standards was found, with ranges of non-compliance between 10% and 61.2% of the procedures. The areas of greatest deficiency were dentistry, vaccination, and minor procedures.

Conclusion: The observed non-compliance must be corrected with the urgent implementation of new procedures adjusted to universal precautions and the adequate training of personnel. More studies similar to this are needed in other IPSs in the country.
