Food citizenship and sovereignty from the territory: the role of the community gardens

Abstract

This article analyzes the relationship among food citizenship, food security, and food sovereignty, highlighting the role of community gardens in shaping sustainable and equitable food systems. The study aims to identify trends, key actors, and existing gaps in the scientific literature on this topic. Methodologically, a bibliometric study was conducted using the Scopus database, covering the period from 2015 to 2025, with the search carried out in January 2026. This analysis was complemented by network visualization techniques using VOSviewer software. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, the final sample consisted of 681 documents. The results reveal sustained growth in scientific output and predominance of interdisciplinary approaches focused on agroecology, food governance, and urban planning. Thematic clusters related to citizen participation, food security, and nutritional health are identified. The study concludes that community gardens constitute a strategic mechanism for strengthening territorial resilience, promoting food equity, and contributing to the formulation of public policies, particularly in Latin American contexts.
