This study was conducted to compare the Emotional Coefficient (EQ) and its Intrapersonal, Interpersonal, Stress Management and Adaptability Scales, in federated adolescent athletes and non-athletic adolescents. It was applied to a sample of 346 subjects (172 athletes and 174 non-athletes) with an average of 14.6 years, the Emotional Intelligence Coefficient test (BarOn-EQ-YV, Baron & Parker, 2000). Additionally, athletes were administered a questionnaire with a perceived motivational climate PMCSQ (Balaguer et al, 1997, Newton, Duda, and Yin, 2000) to determine their orientation towards the ego or the task.
The data found using the Student's T test indicate a significant difference in the Emotional Coefficient between competing athletes and non-athletes (p = 000). In addition, in the Wilcoxon test for medians comparison in related nonparametric data, p = .000 value was found, which indicates that the group of athletes identified a more strongly task-oriented motivational climate (X= 84.2) than the ego orientation (X= 47.9). Finally, it was correlated moderately the motivational climate with orientation to the task with the EQ in the sports subjects (p =, 000).
