Legal Research Methods. An analysis from the three-dimensional perspective of law

Addressing ongoing concerns about methodological rigor in legal research and the frequent conflation of professional practice with scientific inquiry, this article aims to systematize research methods—legal-dogmatic, socio-legal, historical-legal, philosophical-legal, and comparative law—and articulate their complementary integration as a comprehensive guide for contemporary researchers. The study employs a qualitative methodology, utilizing documentary analysis within an analytical-systematic framework. Through a review of specialized literature and application of the Tridimensional Theory of Law (norm, fact, and value) as an analytical lens, the research examines the structure, purpose, and scope of each methodological approach. The principal outcome is a detailed classification of these five essential methods. The findings indicate that high-quality legal research should move beyond exclusive reliance on the traditional dogmatic method by adopting a pluralistic perspective. Methodological triangulation is recommended as a deliberate and rigorous strategy to combine these approaches, thereby facilitating a more comprehensive understanding of legal phenomena, enhancing the validity of findings, and improving the capacity to inform legislative and jurisprudential reforms effectively.
