Emerging management in occupational health and safety from a transcomplex perspective

Abstract

Introduction: To address the new challenges facing occupational health and safety, the transcomplex management model is presented for consideration as an emerging paradigm within Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems, a paradigm that does not seek to provide causal explanations for the processes of health and illness in the workplace.Objective: To construct a reflective hermeneutic analysis of emerging managerial processes regarding occupational health that is being developed from a transcomplex perspective in Venezuela.Methods: Based on a documentary-bibliographic methodological framework, this essay was structured around there main perspectives: Transcomplexity and Occupational Health Management; Transcomplex Leadership as a component of management; and the Transcomplex Integrative Approach within occupational health and safety services.Results: Transcomplexity represents an emerging paradigm that entails a new approach to occupational health practices and a scientific understanding of the social determinants of the health-illness-work nexus, thereby expanding the traditional boundaries and behaviors of occupational health and safety professionals.Conclusions: Within this "thinking-feeling-acting" framework, the professional in this field ceases to be a passive mediator between theory and action, becoming instead a participating mediator who constructs and deconstructs knowledge, while developing professional practices in a meaningful way, characterized by critical, reflective, participatory, and ethical-affective dimensions.
