LGBTIQ+ Content in Undergraduate Medical Education in Mexico: A Curricular Documentary Analysis

Abstract

Objective: To determine the proportion of Mexican undergraduate medical schools that explicitly incorporate curricular content or courses addressing sexual diversity, gender identity, and comprehensive care of LGBTIQ+ populations.

Methods: A documentary, cross-sectional, descriptive study with categorical content analysis and comparison of proportions between subgroups was conducted in June 2026 on the universe of 174 Mexican universities offering undergraduate medicine programs registered with the Mexican Council for the Accreditation of Medical Education (COMAEM) and/or the Ministry of Public Education's official registry (SIRVOES-SEP). Variables were operationalized through review of curricula, accreditation records, and institutional websites, classifying each program as ELIGIBLE or NOT ELIGIBLE according to the presence of explicit LGBTIQ+ curricular content.

Results: Two of the 174 universities analyzed (1.1%) were identified with an explicit course or curricular content oriented to LGBTIQ+ care, both public institutions, integrated as elective content within the clinical cycle. No private institution (0/107) presented such content. A minority subgroup additionally reported incorporating a transversal gender perspective in related courses (reproductive health, bioethics, social medicine), without LGBTIQ+-specific content.

Conclusions: A critical curricular gap was determined to exist in undergraduate medical education in Mexico regarding care for LGBTIQ+ populations, concentrated almost exclusively in public universities and under non-mandatory modalities, which may compromise the preparedness of future physicians to provide equitable and affirming clinical care for this population.
