Abstract

February is a good month to talk about tourism and culture in Uruguay. It is the perfect excuse to get into the topic to the sound of “Borocotó, chas, chas”, or a “tac tac tac tac, tac tac” emitted by the boy, a piano or a snare drum. This is the name given to the drums that accompany the candombe and that makes the series of inaugural parades of the longest carnival in the world, Intangible Heritage of Humanity, the Carnival of Uruguay, so special.

On the streets of Uruguay, starting in the last days of January and throughout February, a vibrant and contagious energy takes over the cities and towns. It's time for Carnival, a festivity that combines creativity, music, dance and culture in a unique and colorful celebration. The Uruguayan Carnival is much more than a simple party; It is a cultural expression rooted in the national identity and history of the country (Carnival Museum, 2019).
