Democracy and Mechanism of Citizen Participation: Challenges of Politics in the Information Age and Media Interventionism

This article aims to develop an analysis from the intervention policy generated by the mass media in the development of mechanisms for citizen participation and democracy at the global level, establishing a specific study of the result of the plebiscite for peace in Colombia, the popular consultation in the United Kingdom that generated BREXIT in the European Union and the recent election of President Donald Trump in the United States.
In common, it is observed a shift to the right side in political matters and the thesis handled is that the mass media generated an intervention in the political mentalities of the citizens, making that their democratic participation determines results that, in principle, were little expected and meant a mistake in political analysis determining the opposite direction.
In summary, the aim of this article is to demonstrate how misinformation, misrepresentation and conservative tendencies of the population produced unexpected results, affecting the world view on the development of democracy and the regression towards credibility of the political system.
