Prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms in bacteriologists and clinical laboratory workers

Objective: To know the prevalence of DME and its possible causes, to subsequently recommend prevention and control strategies.
Methodology: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was then carried out on 42 bacteriologists and clinical laboratories in the city of Cali (Colombia). Sociodemographic, anthropometric and labor data were collected. The Nordic Questionnaire was used to characterize the musculoskeletal symptoms.
Results: Predominance of musculoskeletal symptoms in the neck (87%), followed by low back pain (84%) and shoulders (50%). Respondents that in 88% of cases the symptoms were due to improper postures, followed by repetitive movements.
Conclusion: The most affected region in this sector of health workers is the neck and that this is mainly due to long periods of time in inappropriate postures. It is necessary to implement programs for the postural education of bacteriologists and management of active breaks.
