Analysis of the sustainability of higher education institutions in the department of Meta (Colombia)

Sustainability in higher education institutions goes beyond the formation processes, encompassing all administrative actions and the generation of well-being for the university community and that adjacent to the campus. The aim of this work was to analyze how environmental sustainability has been incorporated into higher education institutions in the Orinoquía, using as a case study those whose area of influence is the department of Meta (Colombia), in order to contribute to the understanding of the advances and gaps in this sector of the country. For this, the compilation of technical and bibliographic information on the actions developed by the institutions in different fields was carried out; a diagnostic approach to the perception of university communities regarding the incorporation of sustainability and finally an analysis of the landscape structure of the campuses of the institutions studied. The data indicate that significant developments have been made in the incorporation of sustainability since the very creation of the institutions and that recent educational and environmental regulations promote the systematization and organization of said efforts, the integration of the educational sector being fundamental within the construction of well-being in its area of influence and the use of the territory. It is expected that this work will contribute to directing efforts to remedy gaps such as intra- and inter-institutional atomization and the underutilization of spaces for citizen participation, to which higher education institutions have much to contribute.
