This article provides a foundational overview of the Inter-American Human Rights System (IAHRS) and its significance in promoting and safeguarding fundamental rights in the Americas. It initiates by placing the IAHRS in the context of the history of human rights and its contemporary relevance. Subsequently, it delves into the legal and normative framework of the system, emphasizing the American Convention on Human Rights as its cornerstone and other complementary treaties. Moreover, the article explores the pivotal institutions of the IAHRS, such as the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACtHR), along with their roles in monitoring and protecting human rights in the region. Lastly, it addresses the contemporary challenges confronting the system and its future outlook.
