GUIDELINES FOR AUTHORS

The Culture of Care Journal has the mission to be a space open to thinking and criticism, respectful of diversity and generator of knowledge, that hopes to reach academic communities and institutions related to health on a regional, national and international field, with publications resulting of the academic activity related to care, in maximum reliability, consistency, veracity and present conditions.

The Journal is directed towards disclosing mostly researches, topic revisions and reflections on the healthcare and health education areas, with an emphasis on nursing care. It is directed to all healthcare and social sciences workers and it has a six-monthly periodicity. 

Articles’ originality. All articles forwarded to the Culture of Care Journal must be original and unedited, and the author is obliged to inform the editor about any submission to any other publication.

Reserved rights. The editorial committee of the Culture of Care Journal requests authors to relinquish the ownership of copyrights for their article to be published and for their materials to be reproduced, published, edited, set, communicated and publicly transmitted, in any form or medium, as well as its distribution in the number of the Journal’s copies that are required, and its public communication in each of its modalities, including its availability to the public through electronic, optic or any other means, with exclusively scientific, cultural, broadcast and non-profit purposes.

The editorial committee reserves the right to accept or reject an article, it does not acquire a commitment to the authors once it is accepted, regarding the date or editing for its publication. It also reserves the right to make any editorial revision considered necessary, even the condensation or omission of parts of the text, tables, figures and annexes, without altering its scientific content. The responsibility for the opinions and points of view in the manuscripts, regarding entities or people, corresponds to the authors.

Evaluation process. The articles will be submitted to an evaluation process that will be developed in the following way: The editorial committee will initially review if the article follows the Journal’s topic index and if it follows the editorial conditions stablished in these instructions. Alongside with the article, the authors must send the CV format for authors. Download.

Once this step is fulfilled, the document will be sent to external evaluators, accompanied with the instructions for the authors and a format to grade scientific and editorial aspects, said evaluation will be anonymous for both people. In a 15-day lapse, the evaluator will resend the fulfilled format alongside the article with its observations. The format may dictate: A) publish without changes. B) publish with modifications. C) reject. The evaluations will be sent to the authors and in the case of category B, they must be resent with the pointed modifications. The editorial committee will be the one to decide about the publication of the article and if it is accepted, the committee will send a document where the author or authors will sign over the complete ownership of their copyrights to the editor.

Conflict of interest. The editor and the editorial committee will be aware of any possible conflicts of interest that may affect the impartiality of the evaluators or that make them unfit to evaluate the article.

Submission process. The original text must be sent in an impersonal way, via e-mail, where the authors request the publication, inform that the article is original and that all authors have reviewed and approved the sent manuscript. They must specify: the name of the author in charge, phone number and e-mail address for communication. All figures, graphics and tables must be sent on a different attachment, prepared on Microsoft Excel, and all photographs must be sent in JPEG format with its numeration, titles, captions and respective sources, they all must be numbered consecutively and referenced in the text.

The sent articles must be adjusted to the “Uniform requirements for manuscripts sent to biomedical Journals of the Vancouver group (1997)”.

  • The text must not exceed 15 pages, letter sized paper, written with single spacing, with margins of minimum 3 centimeters for each side. Font type Arial, size 12 points. The author must keep copies in electronic means because the Journal will not be responsible for damages or losses occurred during the submission or the revision or editing processes.
  • The title of the paper will be as concise as possible, and it must be presented both in English and Spanish. The names of the author and coauthors will be placed under the title using Microsoft Word’s tool: references, footnote with consecutive numbers for various authors. It must include their positions, training, institution they’re associated to and e-mail.
  • The article must contain an abstract of the paper of maximum 250 words including the objective, methodology, results and conclusions. It must be presented in Spanish and English.
  • It must include key words that describe the content of the text, no more than five in both Spanish and English, specially considering the exact translation of all terms regarding to technicalities, neologisms and acronyms.
  • All key words must be standardized according to the ones accepted by international data bases. They can be consulted on the Virtual Health Library of the OPS, available in: http://www.bvsalud.org and it is necessary to check the descriptors in health sciences through the link DeCS-Terminología en Salud, also available in: http://decs.bvs.br/E/homepagee.htm or extracted from the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) from Index Medicus, available in: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/.
  • If the article is about scientific research, it must contain an introduction, methodology, results, discussion, conclusions and recommendations.
  • The introduction must be brief and provide only the necessary information for the reader to understand the text that follows. At the end, it must contain a paragraph that exposes in a clear way the objectives of the paper.
  • The methodology must describe the type of study, the population, the type of sampling, the instruments and the method of data recollection, the type of analysis used as well as indicate the statistical package used. In this section, it must be mentioned the following of the codes of ethics in scientific research in human beings and the application of informed consent when necessary.
  • The results must be presented sequentially supported in tables and figures, and the text must only mention the most relevant data, avoiding the tendency to repeat all data observed in the tables.
  • The discussion must be destined to comparing the results obtained in other investigations or theorical references, with the positions and analysis of the authors scientifically backed up.
  • The conclusions must refer to the findings and, in this way, the results and discussion must be detached from it. Avoid emitting conclusions that result from the authors’ own positions but that do not have back up on the data obtained in the study. Recommendations can be included when necessary.
  • If it is about revision and reflection articles, the content of the text must not exceed 15 pages, letter sized paper, written with single spacing, with margins of minimum 3 centimeters for each side. Font type Arial, size 12 points.
  • Regarding revision articles, the author must present, in a wide and critical way, the bibliography regarding a topic, placed in a specific perspective and exposing tendencies and advances, which implies an extensive bibliographical revision (minimum of 30 references).
  • Regarding reflection articles, the author analyses, interprets or makes a critic about a topic, from the original sources. It is a present and original contribution. Regarding articles about the revision of topics or reflections, the article must contain an introduction.
  • This is an optional section, and it refers to the quotation of people, institutions or other that may have collaborated with the realization of the paper.
  • They must be sequentially numbered in the text using Arabic numerals between parentheses. The list of references must appear at the end of the text under the title “references”.

The references must be presented according to the following format of agreement of uniform requirements for manuscripts sent to biomedical Journals:

  • Author or authors (author’s last name, followed by their initials, without punctuation signs between these elements, and the names of the authors separated by comas. If there are numerous authors, a maximum of six must be written; if they are more numerous that this, the first six must be quoted followed by the abbreviation “et al”. Title of the article and subtitle (if it is the case) separated by a colon. Title of the journal it belongs to/year of publication; volume/number of the journal (between parentheses); rank of pages. Example:

Nissinen A, Berrios X, Puska P. Intervenciones comunitarias contra las enfermedades no transmisibles: lecciones de los países desarrollados para los países en desarrollo. Boletín de la Organización Mundial de la Salud. 2001;79(10): 963-970.

  • Full last names and authors’ names initials separated by commas. Book title and subtitle (if it is the case) separated by a colon. Number of edition or reprint indicated with the abbreviation ed. Or reimpr. (this information is omitted when it corresponds to the first edition of the book). City of publication: editorial; year or publication. Pages. Example:

Ackley BJ, Ladwing GB. Manual de diagnósticos de enfermería. 7ª ed. Madrid: editorial Elsevier; 2007. p. 395-425

The electronic references must follow this format: Author. In case of not knowing the author, the institution responsible for the publication must be included. Title of the article or document. [date of consult] Available on: write web page. Example:
