This article analyzes a situation of nursing in the hospital area in which the nursing knowledge patterns proposed by Carper and the metaparadigmatic concepts are identified in light of the Self-care Deficit Theory. The experience of care was experienced with a patient with physical disability and heart failure, during the academic practices carried out by IV semester nursing students of the University of Sucre, by the Internal Medicine service of a second level care institution.
Using narrative as a methodological strategy facilitated the understanding of the meaning of empirical, aesthetic, personal and ethical knowledge patterns, and the recognition of developing sustained actions based on a nursing theory. In this experience of care the importance of the family as an essential element in facing difficult situations and support for patient recovery is emphasized. The analysis of these aspects reaffirms the importance of providing nursing care with a holistic vision that can improve the quality of it and transcend in our role as caregivers.
