Prevalence of falls in hospitalized patients in two health institutions in pereira

Objective: To establish the frequency of falls in hospitalized patients in two, third-level institutions in the municipality of Pereira and the intrinsic and extrinsic factors surrounding their occurrence. Methods: We retrospectively collected the information of falls in hospitalized patients in 2009, in two, third-level institutions, one official and one private, through an instrument established by the Ministry of Social Protection for the adverse event log. Results: 60% of falls occurred in men and 54.7% in patients over 60 years. 64.5% of falls did not cause physical harm to the patient. The absence of a systematic investigation of these events was evident in the public institution, since only data of the circumstances of the event were obtained in 10 of the 94 incidents reported. Clinical alterations such as: neurological, cardiac, respiratory, metabolic and mental, were the intrinsic factors that most affected the patient’s falls, (25.9%), followed by age (24.1%). The extrinsic factor that outweighed the rest was lack of accompaniment (38.0%), followed by the presence of a wet and slippery ground surface (35.0%). Recommendation: Develop a protocol for assessing the risk of falls, to apply to all patients upon admission and during hospitalization, and to inform all health personnel and family the detected risk.
