Abstract

Introduction: HIV / AIDS was addressed as a multifactor problem, with profound social background economic and cultural roots, which affects the poorest, and increasingly women and youth; and fighting it faces a huge challenge, due to the lack of therapeutic adherence. Recognition is sought before approaching a meaningful experience of adherence to treatment, in order to interpret the look that demands a commitment to the health care of individuals, families and communities, and sensitivity that is reflected in the experiences; everyday thousands of people are living with HIV. Methods: A qualitative case study. This was the participation of a voluntary HIV positive person, leader of a self health group (SHG). From textual expressions of the interview categories and codes of interpretation were unveiled that were treated in the analysis as educational messages that allowed reflection on the implications of nursing care required by people with HIV and their families in pursuit of adherence to treatment. Results: For the interviewed, being HIV positive adherent to treatment, means living fighting and fighting for living, overcoming the fear of discrimination, motivating, educating and controlling the adverse effects of drugs. Conclusions: It was a lesson of life, that supports professional practice in fighting one of the major scourges afflicting humanity today: the HIV virus. The messages were the beginning of learning to deal with the great social responsibility that makes professional care in the struggle against the greatest evil plague mankind, which is fast approaching it, and requires interdisciplinary management, with joint activities aimed at lessening the vulnerability of those at greatest risk.
