Abstract

Objetive

To analyze through a review of the scientific literature aspects inherent to the difficulties, tools and coping capacity of ostomized patients at the time of resuming their daily activities, their interaction with people and their acceptance with themselves.

Methodology

The methodology used consisted of a descriptive review of 40 articles published in specialized journals, published between 2012 and 2021, on issues of patient adaptation to ostomy surgery.

Result

Papers that, after being analyzed, and passed through a medical discussion, result in four clearly delimited subcategories such as the description of the patients, the image of the condition, the way of coping with the new reality, and the present and future repercussions on their body and mental state. Situations that in the light of the bibliographic research allow to discover, confront and present a proposal on the human capacity of coping by medical intervention.

Conclusion

It is concluded that, be it digestive ostomy, gastrostomy, tracheotomy, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, and other related ones, are manageable operations according to the social, economic, affective and mental condition of the patient, just as it is impossible to avoid the emergence of negative attitudes related to surgery; However, there is knowledge and procedures to intervene in the situation, demonstrating that any reality derived from a surgery of this type can lead to a favorable situation, both for the patient, as well as the medical staff and the family of the intervened person.
