Author Guidelines
Submission Preparation Checklist
To ensure a fair and timely evaluation, Avances: Investigación en Ingeniería requests that authors carefully verify that their submission meets all of the requirements listed below. Compliance with these guidelines is essential to guarantee publication quality and to expedite the peer-review process. Failure to adhere to any of these requirements may result in rejection of the manuscript without exception.
- Originality and exclusivity. The article is an original, previously unpublished work that does not infringe any copyright and is submitted exclusively to this journal. It has not been previously published nor submitted to any other publication.
- Formats and files. Two separate files have been prepared (cover page and manuscript) in the original language of the article (Spanish or English), strictly complying with the formats available in the instructions for authors section. Both files are in Microsoft Word format and have been completed in their entirety.
- Content and presentation. The manuscript includes all figures and tables in editable color format, embedded within the text to facilitate comprehension. All cited references include their corresponding DOI (Digital Object Identifier) or web address, where available.
- Authorization for the processing of personal data. By submitting to the journal, authors agree to comply with the editorial process parameters, ethical and quality guidelines, and other applicable journal regulations.
- Additional declarations. Where artificial intelligence tools have been used, their use has been transparently disclosed, including the specific application made of such tools. Authors must also declare any potential conflicts of interest with respect to the research described in the manuscript.
Instructions for Authors
1) Required Submission Formats
- Cover Page
- Manuscript
2) Style Guide
- Word limit. Submitted articles must have a minimum of 6,000 words and a maximum of 8,000 words (excluding the abstract and references).
- Font and size. The body text, tables, and illustrations must be presented in Arial typeface, 12 points.
- Line spacing. The text must be formatted with 1.5 line spacing.
- The journal uses the IEEE referencing system (available at: http://ieeeauthorcenter.ieee.org/wp-content/uploads/IEEE-Reference-Guide.pdf).
- Three levels of headings are recognized:
First level: left-aligned, bold, initial capital letter, 14-point font.
Second level: left-aligned, bold, initial capital letter, 12-point font.
Third level: paragraph heading, bold, italic, initial capital letter, 12-point font.
- Explanatory notes. Footnotes should be used sparingly and only to provide brief, essential clarifications that supplement the main text but are not critical to the understanding of the argument.
- Abbreviations should be used in moderation, employing internationally approved nomenclature for the respective discipline. They must be defined at their first occurrence in the text and used consistently thereafter. Abbreviations should not appear at the beginning of a sentence, in the title, or in the abstract.
- If the article includes equations, they must be left-aligned and numbered consecutively within each section. Authors are advised to use a dedicated equation editor such as LaTeX, MathType, or the built-in equation editors in Microsoft Word to ensure correct rendering of mathematical symbols. The meaning of each symbol used in the equations must be clearly explained in the text.
- Tables and figures. Tables and figures must be prepared in accordance with IEEE standards and submitted in editable format. They must be numbered consecutively and referenced in the text. Each figure must include a concise and clear caption in 10-point Arial typeface. Captions must be self-explanatory, without requiring the reader to refer to other parts of the text. All abbreviations and acronyms used in captions must be explained. If tables or figures are reproduced from other sources, they must faithfully replicate the original and the source must be cited following IEEE style. If tables or figures are the authors’ own creation, the phrase “Source: authors’ own elaboration” must be included at the end of the caption.
- Images, maps, and illustrations. All images must have a minimum resolution of 600 dpi and be submitted in color. Maps must include a legend, cardinal points, and scale where applicable. Illustrations subject to copyright restrictions require explicit legal authorization, which must be attached to the declaration of originality and copyright assignment form.
Submission Preparation
Use of required formats. All submissions consist of two separate files, in the original language of the article (Spanish or English), available for download at the following links: cover page and manuscript. Files must be submitted exclusively through the Open Journal System (OJS) platform, in compliance with the journal’s style guide.
Cover Page. This file must be prepared in Microsoft Word, letter size, with 2.54 cm margins, and must contain the following information:
- Author information. Full names of all authors (maximum four), institutional affiliations (university or organization to which they belong), institutional email addresses (excluding commercial services such as Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail, etc.), and individual ORCID codes. Each author must hold an individual, visible, and up-to-date ORCID code; if not yet registered, one may be created at the following link. Each author must provide a brief biographical summary of their academic background and research interests (maximum 50 words).
- Article type. The typology of the article must be clearly specified.
- Declaration of conflicts of interest. Authors must declare whether any conflicts of interest exist that may influence the results or publication of the article, whether arising from personal, professional, or financial relationships. A conflict of interest arises when it biases or influences the conclusions, results, or any aspect of the research, or compromises copyright or the editorial decision. For further information, please refer to the journal’s ethics and quality guidelines.
- The funding source that supported the research must be indicated, including the reference code if applicable.
- Academic acknowledgments (optional). Acknowledgments to sponsoring institutions, collaborators, reviewers, translators, and any other support received for the research may be included.

- Maximum 150 words. It must clearly and concisely present the main points of the article, including at minimum: the general research objective, the methodology employed, the most relevant results, and the principal conclusions.
- A maximum of five keywords, listed in alphabetical order and separated by semicolons, that precisely describe the content of the article. Keywords must be relevant, specific, and preferably drawn from the UNESCO Thesaurus, available at the following link.
- This section must contextualize the research by presenting the problem under study and its relevance. The main research question must be stated and the importance of addressing it duly justified.
- Theoretical Framework. This section must develop the theoretical framework underpinning the research, reviewing the principal theories and concepts related to the topic and establishing how they relate to the research question.
- This section must provide a detailed description of the research design, the population or sample selected, the data collection instruments used, and the procedure followed for data analysis. Where applicable, approval by the ethics committee of the participating institutions must be included.
- This section presents the findings obtained in the research. Tables, graphs, or figures should be used to illustrate results in a clear and concise manner.

- This section summarizes the principal conclusions drawn from the research and highlights the study’s contribution to existing knowledge in the field.
- A complete list of all sources cited in the text must be included, following IEEE style (minimum 15 references).
Additional Considerations:
- Direct quotations of fewer than 40 words must be enclosed in double quotation marks (“”). When a quotation is embedded within another, single quotation marks (‘’) are used. - Foreign languages. Words and phrases in foreign languages must be italicized. A translation in parentheses may be included if necessary.
- Figures and tables. All figures and tables must be numbered and have a descriptive title. They must be embedded in the text and referenced accordingly.
- To ensure a fair and impartial peer-review process, the manuscript must be completely anonymous. Authors must ensure the removal of any information that could identify them, including their names, institutional affiliations, or any other personal references. This includes the removal of personal acknowledgments and any details that could reveal the identity of the authors.
