Abstract

This paper addresses the new role that the bicycle is acquiring in numerous cities as a sustainable urban transport mode after decades of being considered as a residual transport option.  The socio-economic changes of the recent decades and the new demands are making it possible to reincorporate the bicycle not only in traditional spaces.  In this context, we assess the accessibility of the population to different cyclist infrastructures. The city of Zaragoza (Spain) serves as a study case.

The analysis is based on the assessment of the accessibility of the population, urban facilities and intermodality with other modes of transport. The results are presented through thematic cartography, which allows visualizing and identifying different situations in the city. As the main conclusion, the bicycle infrastructures model of Zaragoza has allowed to increasing the modal share of the use of bicycles, which shows the usefulness of adequate design of bicycle infrastructures in cities.
