A historical constant in Political Science has been the question of power. What is, and what legitimizes it? Why some have the right to command and duty to obey other? Are consensual power relations, and what is the role of force or violence in these relationships? All those have been questions that have never lost force in the political arena, and that is why they are under constant review and debate. Max Weber and Guglielmo Ferrero were not immune to this concern and developed theories about the phenomenon of power. This article gives a schematic exposition of his theories and precise their positions about the role of legitimacy, consensus and violence within relationships of power.
