Abstract

Background: Microalbuminuria is a marker of generalized vascular endothelial dysfunction that may increase the atherogenic states. Objective: To determine whether the degree of microalbuminuria is related to the severity of acute coronary syndrome. Material and methods: An transversal analytic study was conducted at the Internal Medicine and Intensive Care Unit of the State Social Enterprise and Comprehensive Rehabilitation Health Care Center from Barranquilla, 40 pa- tients with acute coronary syndrome were included, 20 with angina unstable and 20 with acute myocardial infarc- tion. Patients had at least 20 minutes of ischemic symptoms, elevation of at least 0.1 mV ST segment in two leads or of 0.2 mV in two contiguous precordial leads or new left bundle-branch block bundle. Urine sample was taken at any time of seven days after the syndrome, determining the degree of microalbuminuria by dipstick. Statistical analysis included t Student test for independent samples. Results: Patients with angina had microalbuminuria of 45 ± 38 mg /dl, whereas in patients with acute myocardial infarction was 278.4 ± 69.4 mg /dl. The intergroup microalbuminuria values were compared (p = 0.002). buminuria is related to the severity of acute coronary syndrome. It is higher with acute myocardial infarction than with unstable angina.
