Background:Intestinal bacterial overgrowth is a syndrome where there is malabsorption of nutrients caused by an excessive number of colonic bacteria in the small intestine; in children, it helps to increase the number of cases of malnutrion. Objective: To evaluate intestinal bacterial overgrowth and nutritional status in a sample of children between 5 and 10 years of the district of Juan Mina, Atlantico. Materials and Methods: This study included 64 infants (mean age 7,2 ± 1,2 years) whose nutritional status was evaluated by calculating the body mass index (BMI) according to their ages. Then the nutritional status of the chil- dren was evaluated with the help of the hydrogen breath test after lactulose administration for diagnosis of SBI. The Chi-square test was used to determine the relationship between the multiple variables. Results: Among the 64 children, 3 (5%) were underweight, 54 (84%) had normal weight and 7 (11%) were over- weight. The prevalence of intestinal bacterial overgrowth was 12.5% and significant statistical difference was found between nutritional status and the presence of this pathology (p> 0,05). Conclusion: The prevalence of low weight for age and intestinal bacterial overgrowth were low. No relationship between intestinal bacterial overgrowth and the nutritional status in children of the district of Juan ina, Atlantico.
