Abstract

Opium has been used to relieve different types of pain and in a playful and recreational way, but develops physical and psychic dependence and tolerance. Opioid intoxication is almost always the result of accidental overdose of heroin when this is first used or consumed in higher purity and quantity and when former users develop tolerance to use it again. In our country, the majorities of drug deaths due to heroin overdose, alone or combined with other substances. Ten cases of deaths due to opioids were reported in Bogotá (Colombia), between 1996 and 2001. Another way of intoxication occurs in the “drug couriers” (bodypackers) who transport heroin or cocaine wrapped in condoms which is ingested or deposited in the rectum or vagina. The breakdown of these condoms can cause lethal intoxication. Taking into account the high frequency of this type of intoxication, it is important to know the management and diagnosis of that.
