Abstract

In order to compare the laparoscopic and conventional cholecystectomy in the management of cholelithiasis in acute pancreatitis, in Barranquilla, in the first half of 2010, we designed a multicenter case-control study which the complications, hospital stay and expenses were taken into account. Data were obtained from primary and secondary source, and were processed through Epi-info 3.5.3.The mean age was 54.5± 11.6 years old, female gender was the most frequent: 90% laparoscopic cholecystectomy and 85% conventional surgery. The hospital stay was shorter in the laparoscopic cholecystectomy group (3.8 ± 1.9 days versus 5.8 ± 2.4 days, OR = 9.14 CI = 3.13 – 63.43; p = 0.0002 for stay less than five days) and the successful exit was more frequent in that same group (100% versus 90%). We conclude that the best approach for the management of cholelithiasis in acute pancreatitis is the laparoscopic cholecystectomy in terms of hospital stay and leave conditions.
