Abstract

Objective: Determine effectiveness of radiotherapy vs radiotherapy-chemotherapy in patients with locally ad- vanced cervical cancer. Barranquilla (Colombia). Materials and Methods: Comparative analytical study conducted in patients diagnosed with locally advanced cervical cancer in two private hospitals of Barranquilla, using simple sampling Epidat, a significant sample of 50 patients per group was considered. Radiotherapy Group (RT): Radiation therapy in the range of 50 Gy for 5 weeks; Radiotherapy-Chemotherapy Group (RT-CT): radiation in the range of 50 Gy for 5 weeks + cisplatin 40 mg/m² / week for 6 weeks. Epi-Info 3.5.1 was used to tabulate. Significance level was <0.05. Results: Patients of 51 years old or more were more frequent in the two study groups, in the RT group, the average age at onset of sexual activity was 18.1 ± 3.6 years; in the RT-CT group, the average was 17.1 ± 2.6 years, 52% in the RT group and 54 % in the RT-CT group reported more than 3 sexual partners. Complete response to therapy was more frequent in the RT-CT patients (28 %) compared with 14 % in the RT (value p = 0.08), adverse events were more frequent in the RT-CT group (90 %, p = 0.001). Conclusion: No significant difference was found in efficacy between radiotherapy and radiotherapy-chemothera- py used in patients with locally advanced cervical cancer.
