Infections acquired after forty-eight hours of hospitalization are considered nosocomial; they may occur associa- ted with surgical procedures, with incidence of 0.5 to 15%. In Colombia the available data show a behavior that differs from the one found in developed countries. In this descriptive, retrospective and prospective, longitudinal study we evaluated a third level hospital in the metropolitan area of Barranquilla, Colombia using as a benchmark the performance of the cleaning and disinfection, and antimicrobial procedures use in Intensive Care and Internal Medicine units. The results showed which factors must be changed to make a positive impact in reducing the frequency of nosocomial infections, entities that concentrate the use of antimicrobials in the institution and led to the provision of guidance to improve internal policies in handling control systems.
